A computer numerical control (CNC) turning machine turns metal blanks into distinctly shaped cylindrical components. The machine holds a bar of material firmly in a chuck, where it spins and moves via a turret. Automated tools remove excess material along the length of the bar stock as it rotates in accordance with programmed instructions derived from a digital design file. CNC turning machines can produce identical parts within tight tolerances, with high repeatability between the thousands of pieces within a set order.

CNC Turning Process

While CNC turning centers may vary somewhat in their exact capabilities in regard to tooling and spindle options, speed, power, and outer diameter limitations. Generally speaking, however, they all machine metal blanks into specific shapes using a multitude of different tool mounted on a spindle. The process begins by mounting a metal blank into the machine. While the blank is typically cylindrical, it may be square or hexagonal depending on the project specifications.

Operators must load the required tools into the turret, with exact tooling varying by project. CNC lathes and turning centers vary in the number of tools they can hold in the turret. More advanced machines typically hold more tools. CNC turning centers with live tooling capabilities can perform cuts while the blank is turning or stationary, which allows for operations such as hole drilling, slot cutting, and surface milling.

With the workpiece and tooling installed, the CNC machine begins to cut the rotating blank in accordance with its programmed instructions. While some machines only work on one side of the machine, more advanced turning centers facilitate 360-degree cutting by moving the blank between multiple spindles.

Our CNC Turning Capabilities

At JIT CNC Machining, we offer state-of-the-art CNC turning capabilities, enabling us to produce highly precise machined goods and components. With our in-house Mazak Lathe machine and other CNC machining equipment, we can turn components ranging from 1-98 inches in diameter.

Our team can handle orders of all volumes, from single prototypes to large production runs up to 50,000 units. For high-volume projects, we employ lathes equipped with bar feeders and live tooling capabilities. For lower volumes, we use chucking jaws to secure the bar stock during turning operations.

Along with our CNC turning services and other CNC machining capabilities, we have a great deal of expertise in an expansive range of industries, enabling us to offer our insight and experience to every project. We excel at providing fast turnarounds on complex projects, and we can work up to 80 hours a week and up to seven days a week on your project to make sure it gets done within your required timeline.

When you work with JIT CNC Machining, our experts are always available to address questions or concerns. We prioritize customer satisfaction and always seek to meet and exceed your expectations.  As part of our continuous commitment to quality, our operations have been ISO 9001:2015- and AS9100C-certified for quality management.

We serve clients across multiple industries. We’ve worked with numerous OEMs, high-level suppliers, and government contractors in highly demanding industries, including aerospace and electrical parts.

We have the experience and equipment to deliver high-quality parts within acceptable tolerances for virtually any application.
